Poison Spider Mesa Trail – Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks 2014

Trail Ride May 14, 2014

Poison Spider Mesa Trail is one of my favorite trails.   It has outstanding scenery and plenty of challenges that will bite you if you are not paying attention.

Right out of the gate there is a section of switchbacks as the trail makes a steep climb up to the top of Poison Spider Mesa.  Several large rock ledges and some fun slick rock sections test the nerves of drivers and passengers alike.

It’s always a blast watching different types of vehicles and drivers as they test their comfort zones while navigating the trail.  The smiles after making it up a nerve wrenching obstacle are priceless.

Throughout the Poison Spider Mesa Trail trail there are many obstacles and it’s always helpful to have a trail guide or good spotter with you.  The trail guides at the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks did a great job for everyone on the Poison Spider Mesa Trail this day.  They helped keep everyone as safe as possible while still allowing the adrenaline rush to occasionally kick in.  Below you can see one of our trail guides lending an extra hand (or should I say body) to help the driver power out of the obstacle referred to as “The Wedge”.

The views from our lunch spot at Little Arch are nothing short of spectacular. From the top you get a clear view through the Little Arch down to the Colorado River far below.  Across the canyon you can see the Moab Rim Trail as it scales its way up,  just below the giant red rock bluff.  It is one of the best, and my personal favorite, viewpoints on the trail.

After lunch we all loaded back up and continued on.  Since there was quite a rain storm the weekend before there were some large puddles that added to the difficulty of the trail.  Even with wet tires everyone was able to motor on without too much slippage.

The Poison Spider Mesa trail basically ends with a loop that brings you back out the same way you came in.   On the way out there is one optional steep climb that can be a fun challenge.  As you can see here, this couple put on a good show for the crowd.

We eventually arrived back at the the trail head all in one piece and with smiles on our faces.  This was a great trail ride to start off our Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks event week.

Here are a few more pictures from the trail. (Click to enlarge) Enjoy!
