Yankee Boy Basin : 2013 FJ Summit
Morning came early in Ouray Colorado the day before the 7th Annual FJ Summit would begin. Our Discount Tire crew worked quickly to set up our vendor space and prepare for 3 days of sponsored 4×4 trail rides and interaction with our customers. With the breathtaking San Juan Mountains surrounding us we were working double time so we could get out on the Yankee Boy Basin trail before the event rush.
Our efforts paid off! After set up was complete, we met up with Don (AKA Wikid on www.FJCruiserForums.com) and a few others for a quick ride on The Yankee Boy Basin Trail.
The Yankee Boy Basin trailhead is located at the south end of Ouray, our group stopped here to air down.
The start of the trail is a normal dirt road but the elevation climbs fast! Before you know it, you’re on the side of a steep canyon. Our first stop was at a spot, rightfully named hanging rock. As you can see it is a good thing we do not have overly tall vehicles.
As we continued on we passed a few old mines some of which were still littered building remnants. This is the remains of the Atlas Mine.
There is a restroom stop located about half way up the mountain. This is also a good place to stop and take a short hike to a double waterfall that is located nearby. Unfortunately, there was a traffic jam when we arrived so we made our stop brief and pushed on towards the basin.
The next short stretch of trail was very lush with wild flowers and trees
The last stretch of trail to the top is switchbacks through the gorgeous tundra and at the top there is a hiking trail that starts at 12,200 feet in elevation.
Our crew took a short break at the top to take in the view of the surrounding mountains before heading down to the Yankee Boy Basin.
The Yankee Boy Basin was an awesome place to stop for a break. Some of our group wandered to the edge of the water for a snowball fight while others went to look at the waterfall coming out of the lake. The lineup of vehicles next to the water made for a great photo.
Unfortunately, it was soon time to head back the way we came so we loaded up and headed back into town. It is amazing how different the same trail can look when you are headed in the opposite direction.
After arriving back in town we were excited to kick off the 7th Annual FJ Summit with a Discount Tire sponsored dinner. With the smell of All-American hamburgers and hot dogs sweeping the town, the food lines quickly filled up. Mother Nature must have decided she wanted some of the attention too and she decided to throw us a curve ball. It started to thunder and rain and even some hail came pelting out of the sky. Thankfully, we had a large tent for everyone to huddle under.
As quickly as it came, the rain departed and that gave us a chance to surprise everyone with some desert. How sweet is that?! (pun intended haha!) And if ice cream isn’t sweet enough, we also decided to raffle a few special items for those that stuck it out through the rain.
Here’s Eric and some of our Discount Tire crew putting on a very entertaining show as they gave away some excellent products.
This dinner was an outstanding end to great day. There is nothing better than wheeling in one of the best places in America and meeting new friends.
Special thanks to Don (WIKID on the forums) for guiding us on an impromptu ride of The Yankee Boy Basin trail.
Here are some additional photos from this trail ride and the festivities at the start of the 2013 FJ Cruiser Summit event.
